VAGABONDAGE
Vagabondage serves as a kind of a third act on the Incase IPHONE film series. Even though all of the films have been abstractly autobiographical, this is perhaps my most intimate film yet. The title comes from the fact that when you travel as much as I do a sense of community is lost. Friends, lovers, and family don’t know where you are so things become disconnected. Even though the travel aspect is romantic and I love to visit places, I do sacrifice so much for this life. That’s the “bondage” part. There’s a big misconception that travel equals freedom. It doesn’t. This is the underlying theme of the film. At the same time it also serves as a celebration of these relationships and making this film has really taught me to appreciate the connections I have in this life. The film was shot in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Berlin, and Prague. I self-narrated the film using the English translation of “Ne me quitte pas” (“Don’t Leave Me”), a song written by Jacques Brel in 1959. The music was composed by myself and Aska Matsumiya. People featured in the film are Liz Goldwyn, Terry Richardson, Frankie Rayder, Cali Dewitt, Willo Perron, Ingrid Allen, Andre Saraiva, Anabelle Dexter-Jones, Ashley Lent, Nadine Elfenbein, Alia Penner and Lucy Goodwyn.
